Center for Healthy Equity Conference Explores Racial Inequity, Action

In 1619, the first enslaved African arrived in Jamestown; 400 years later, the U.S. still grapples with racial inequality. On Monday, Sept. 23, Pitt Public Health will host prominent scholars and community activists at “400 Years of Inequality: Achieving Redemption, Reconciliation and Equity Today” to discuss oppression and racial inequity.

The Center for Health Equity conference will take place at the William Pitt Union from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Programming will feature a keynote presentation and discussions about topics including reparations, equity of opportunity and the underdevelopment of well-being in African American neighborhoods.

The conference is organized by the Center for Health Equity, with support from Pitt Public Health's dean's office and the Office of Health Sciences Diversity

The Center for Health Equity aims to understand and reduce health disparities in underserved populations, particularly those in Western Pennsylvania. It engages the community in efforts to reduce the major causes of excess mortality among disadvantaged populations in the region.

Details about the programming, including the full agenda and speaker bios, are available at the Pitt Public Health website.
