With a robust program of discussions and events, the Year of PittGlobal will highlight Pitt’s place in the world as a leader in global research and partnerships. September’s kickoff events will include:
Thursday, Sept. 13: Step Afrika! at Pitt–Greensburg
The first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping, Step Afrika!, performs in Ferguson Theatre in Smith Hall at Pitt–Greensburg from 8-9 p.m.
Saturday, Sept 15: Third Annual EuroFest
Celebrate all things Europe with food booths, live song and dance performances and a marketplace including local artisans and vendors in Wesley W. Posvar Hall from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit the EuroFest information page.
Wednesday, Sept. 19: Panel Discussion: Human Rights in Pittsburgh and the World
Around the country, cities are working to “bring human rights home.” Panelists at this discussion will consider opportunities for achieving dignity and justice for all people in the Barco Law Building from 4:30-6 p.m.
Monday, Sept. 24: Talk: “I am the Widow”
At this talk in the Cathedral of Learning at 5 p.m., Harmony Siganporia will build on her book “’I am the Widow’: An Intellectual Biography of Behramji Malabari” to outline the beginning of the “women’s question” in India.
Thursday, Sept. 27: Talk: Civil Society, Transnational Networks and Global Change
The field of transnational activist networks has evolved rapidly, and Marisa Von Bülow will discuss how digital technologies — specifically social media — affect both activists and researchers of transnational networks. The keynote will begin in the O’Hara Student Center at 4:30 p.m. and a reception will follow.
Friday, Sept. 28: Presentation: Data for Good: The Global Politics of Information for Civil Society
Based on her work with advocacy groups in Montreal, Elizabeth Bloodgood will discuss the tension between nonprofit organization’s usage of “data for good” and growing concerns regarding surveillance, manipulation and government restriction of civil society. The talk will take place in the William Pitt Union from 1-3 p.m.
