Campus Improvements Progress

Pitt's operations team was hard at work continuing exciting campus improvements over winter recess. Here is a snapshot of the progress and updates you’ll see this year:

Bigelow Block Transformation Project

Phase II of the Bigelow Block Transformation Project began, with utility work expanding to the William Pitt Union, where landscaping work will provide a new programmable space. A new streetscape will be installed including bike lanes, a center crosswalk and sidewalks, majorly improving safety and accessibility for travelers.

William Pitt Union Entrances

The Forbes Avenue and Schenley Quad entrances are now the main William Pitt Union entrances through August 2020 when the project will be complete. In addition to the accessible Forbes Avenue entrance, the Fifth Avenue accessible entrance can be accessed from the Quad. The Fifth Avenue entrances are closed. View updates about getting around.

Upper Bigelow Reopened

Upper Bigelow Boulevard, between Fifth Avenue and O’Hara Street, is now open to two-way traffic.

Temporary Closures

A portion of University Place has temporarily closed to continue utility infrastructure work. Access to the Soldiers and Sailors Garage lease-only entrance remains open. Additional temporary partial street and sidewalk closures will happen throughout Phase II.

New Enabling Projects

The new enabling projects to support the Campus Master Plan, including a new Recreation and Wellness Center, provide vital updates to utility infrastructure and a reconfiguration of University Drive. These improvements will create a more pedestrian-friendly and sustainable hillside area.

Pedestrian Stair Closures

Stairs from Irvis Hall to Chevron closed

These stairs will remain closed through summer 2020. Pedestrians can travel between upper and lower campus by using the shuttle service or the Petersen Events Center stairs.

Stairs from Eberly Hall to University Drive A closed

These stairs closed on Dec. 11, 2019, and will remain closed through June 2020. Access to Eberly from the Parkman Avenue stairs remain open.

Traffic—University Drive Closure

Upper University Drive A and University Drive B will be closed to traffic for enabling project work. University Drive B will only be accessible for emergency vehicles and loading to Eberly Hall. Vehicles can access the area using Allequippa Street to University Drive C by Irvis Hall.
