In Case You Missed It: Summer Highlights from @Pitt

In case you took some well-earned time away from work this summer — be it a few days here and there for R&R or a full-fledged summer term away from teaching — you may have missed some news of note from the Pitt community. 

As you get back into the routine of another year, check out some of the most notable stories:

Staff and faculty lucked out with picture-perfect weather for two signature events: the Chancellor’s Annual Staff and Faculty Appreciation Picnic in May and the Staff Council-hosted Pitt Day at Kennywood in July.

@Pitt publishes the news of note expressly for people who are crucial to the University’s success: faculty and staff. 

Pitt’s a vibrant and diverse place to work, and each week we share important news from University leadership and spotlights about the faculty and staff members who make it a special community, announcements about upcoming events and initiatives and accolades about achievements and honors of all varieties.

The Philippine Room’s dedication in June made it the 31st Nationality Room in the Cathedral of Learning.

Proposals and projects earned funding and recognition awards, including 24 projects funded as part of the second year of the Pitt Seed Project and the six proposals that aim to enhance teaching at Pitt and advance teaching models overall and were named Innovation in Education Award winners.

In June, the Board of Trustees Property and Facilities Committee approved a project that will transform Bigelow Boulevard between Fifth and Forbes avenues and the William Pitt Union grounds to improve safety, expand accessibility, upgrade utility infrastructure and enhance the sustainability of the campus hub. (Keep an eye out for additional information about the project, which is scheduled to begin in November.)

The new academic year was announced as The Year of Creativity, and the steering committee invites the University community to apply for project funding.

More than 300 staff and faculty attended the fourth annual University-wide Diversity Retreat, where they were challenged to go beyond lip service to diversity and inclusion and be active initiators of social justice, equity and change.

Ten recipients were awarded 2018-19 Chancellor’s Awards for Staff Excellence — the most prestigious award for University staff.
