Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Boost Pitt’s Recyclemania Results

For the 11th consecutive year, the University’s Pittsburgh campus is participating in Recyclemania, a friendly competition among colleges and universities to promote waste reduction and recycling across campus communities.

Each week through March 30, recycling, composting and trash data are being reported as Pitt vies for national recognition in categories such as waste diversion, per-capita recycling and food waste minimization.

Need a refresher on what’s recyclable on campus? Facilities Management’s recycling page has answers. To request additional recycling bins for spring office cleanup, contact Pitt’s recycling team via email at recycle@fm.pitt.edu or call 412-624-9521. Did you know you can compost on campus? Here's how.

Faculty and staff can help Pitt’s efforts to “outrecycle” the competition by clearing out paper, electronic devices, batteries, toner and other recyclables during the March 11-14 spring break workweek.

If you’d like to see for yourself how much waste can be recycled or composted, student volunteers will join with Republic Waste Services for Waste Sort events on March 1 on the plaza between David Lawrence Hall and Posvar Hall and March 22 on the William Pitt Union’s Bigelow-facing patio. Both events are noon to 4 p.m.

Show your support for “reuse first” with a BYO Mug Shot. Snap a photo with your reusable mug to get a free coffee on the following dates:

  • Monday, March 4, at Towers Lobby from 8-10 a.m.
  • Tuesday, March 5, at Hillman Library from 8-10 a.m.
  • Wednesday, March 6, at Cathedral Coffee from 11 a.m. to noon

Follow Pitt’s progress on the Recyclemania scoreboard. Results are updated every Friday and final results will be announced April 16.
