Survey Findings Can Help Units Better Understand City’s Strengths, Needs

Pitt schools and departments are encouraged to review the new Pittsburgh Regional Quality of Life Survey findings, released by the University Center for Social and Urban Research (UCSUR), in partnership with PittsburghTODAY.

Last conducted in 2011, the survey’s comprehensive findings reflect key socio-demographic variables by age, sex, race, and other criteria with area residents’ views on the economy, education, race relations and other important factors that affect life in the region. The survey’s intent is to understand how the attitudes and circumstances of the region's citizens change over time.

The survey shows that while the quality of life has improved overall, large segments of residents have concerns about air and water quality, housing affordability and race relations. Overall results and sub-findings are available online.

Scott Beach, UCSUR’s interim director, encouraged University personnel to review the data related to their community initiatives. He also is offering to review the results with anyone as part of UCSUR’s mission to collaborate on interdisciplinary research that improves communities.

“This is another way that our University community can leverage knowledge for society’s gain,” Beach said. “I believe that together we can find the best solutions to improve the quality of life for all of our neighbors.”

UCSUR, which recently released its annual report, maintains a permanent research infrastructure available to all faculty and members of the community.
