Upcoming Year of PittGlobal Events: Sept. 27 and 28

In the Year of PittGlobal, we celebrate Pitt being at home in the world and promote the University as a global convening point.

Help us to celebrate with the following September events featuring Pitt’s ties with local and global communities.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Civil Society, Transnational Networks and Global Change

Thursday, Sept. 27

O’Hara Student Center, Dining Room

3900 O’Hara Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15260

This talk reports on the evolution of the rapidly growing field of transnational activist networks over recent decades and considers how digital technologies — and more specifically social media — affect both activists and researchers of transnational networks.

Featured speaker: Marisa Von Bülow, University of Brasilia

A reception will follow the keynote address.

Data for Good: The Global Politics of Information for Civil Society

Friday, Sept. 28
1-2:30 p.m.
William Pitt Union, 548
3959 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15260

Elizabeth Bloodgood is a researcher from Concordia University whose  research examines INGO information advocacy, the national regulation and population ecologies of nonprofit organizations.

This presentation will draw from her work with advocacy groups in Montreal to consider the tensions between expanding data access and usage by non-profit organizations and the promotion of “Data for Good” on the one hand, and concerns about growing surveillance, manipulation, and government restrictions on civil society. What roles can researchers and scholars play in improving data access for civil society?

Featured speaker: Elizabeth Bloodgood, Concordia University
