Day of Service, Interfaith Service, Symposium Planned to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The Pitt community is invited to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through a day of service opportunities alongside nonprofit community partners, an interfaith celebration at Heinz Memorial Chapel and a day-long Social Justice Symposium exploring unconscious bias.

Day of Service

On Monday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Pitt students, faculty, staff and alumni can volunteer to assist nonprofits with projects around the Pittsburgh community through the 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, coordinated by Pitt Serves. Register online before Monday, Jan. 14.

Interfaith Service

On Tuesday, Jan. 22, Pitt’s Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development, Office of Interfaith Dialogue and Engagement and Association of Chaplaincies will celebrate King’s legacy through the arts, including music, singing, dancing and spoken word. The Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Service, which is open to the public, will begin at 6 p.m. at Heinz Memorial Chapel.

Social Justice Symposium

On Thursday, Jan. 24, the Office of Cross Cultural and Leadership Development will present the 2019 Social Justice Symposium, “Creating a Just Community by Making the Unconscious Conscious.” The professional development session is specifically for faculty and staff and is an opportunity to engage in activities and discussions about how to foster inclusive environments by becoming aware of unconscious biases.
