48th Annual Pitt Jazz Week Starts Next Week

Pitt Jazz Week posterA talented group of internationally recognized jazz musicians will convene on Pitt's campus next week as the 48th annual University of Pittsburgh Jazz Seminar and Concert kicks off on Monday, Oct. 29, and runs through Saturday, Nov. 3.

Jazz Week will include evening lectures, daytime seminars by guest musicians, community outreach, a jazz jame session and a performance by the Pitt Jazz Ensemble. All events are free and open to the public.

The week culminates with the legendary Pitt Jazz Concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 in Carnegie Music Hall, 4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland.

Jazz Week events

Jazz Week begins at noon on Monday, Oct. 29, with a free performance by the student-based Pitt Jazz Ensemble at the William Pitt Union Lower Lounge

Day and evening seminars by the visiting guest artists will take place throughout the week at the Frick Fine Arts Building, 650 Schenley Drive.

Pitt Jazz Concert

Jazz Week culminates with the its marquee event, the 48th annual Pitt Jazz concert, which takes place Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Carnegie Music Hall (4400 Forbes Ave., Oakland).

Guest artists at this year's concert include JD Allen, saxophone; Andy Bey, vocals; Joey DeFrancesco, organ; Orrin Evans, piano; Billy Hart, drums; Ingrid Jensen, trumpet; Sean Jones, trumpet; Tineke Postma, saxophone; Reginald Veal, bass; and Mark Whitfield, guitar. Musical direction is by award-winning drummer, composer and producer Terri Lyne Carrington, who will also be on campus Thursday, Nov. 1, to deliver an evening seminar.
